 - La Crosse Blufflands, Kaplan Tract (directions will be mailed to registrants the week of the event)
Join us for a fall hike through the La Crosse Blufflands as we search for mushrooms and lichens in one of the most beautiful settings in our area. Guided by mycologist Sadie Hickey, this educational workshop will give participants the opportunity to learn about mushroom identification specific to the Driftless Area. Participants will be able to share their findings and get assistance from Sadie with mushroom identification as they hike. Mushroom hunting is a popular way to enjoy the seasons. In September, hikers in Wisconsin’s Driftless Area may be lucky enough to find such varieties as honey mushrooms, chicken-of-the-woods, hen-of-the-woods, turkey tail, and puff ball mushrooms. There are also a number of lookalikes that can be poisonous, so it is a great opportunity to explore with someone who has experience identifying fungi. Sadie is an experienced botanist and mycologist with an interest in all the life that surrounds us. The hike will be focused on finding mushrooms, but we will discuss any plants, lichens, or other organisms of interest we encounter. Bring a curious mind, a good pair of shoes, and dress for the weather. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED for this FREE event by October 8 (or until filled). This event is part of the Conservancy’s 2024 Linked to the Land series of outdoor learning experiences in Wisconsin’s Driftless Area, sponsored by our members with support from WXOW / News 19. This is a free guided hike for women. Topic is dependent on what is currently happening in the forest. Format is informal, so that we can learn from each other and enjoy a chance to be out in nature. For Oct 2026 walk, will see what the color is like on the hillsides and decide destination. This is an opportunity to go on a hike in the woods with "the girls" and learn from each other. I may be able to schedule these about once a month in 2026, I'm open to suggestions of time. Location will usually be Iowisota (but might vary over time). Topic will be dependent on what is currently happening in the forest, and what participants are interested in. The format will be informal, so that we can all learn from each other and enjoy a chance to be out together in nature. Linda Haugen (co-owner of Iowisota) will be the leader/host. If you have questions, feel free to email Linda at Iowisota@gmail.com, or call (563)538-6510. Why a "womens" hike?? Linda was been involved in the Minnesota Womens Woodland Network (mnwwn.org) for many years, and learned the power and joy of women sharing knowledge of the outdoors with each other. We can capture a similar experience here. Don't worry men, there are other opportunities when we'll welcome you. Sponsor: Iowisota Retreat and Education Center

Second Saturday Hike - Ferns!
 - Saturday, September 12.            8:00 am
 - Hixon Forest Oak Trail trailhead (first parking lot to the left on Bliss Road), La Crosse WI - see map below
Led by Max Sorenson and Jon Rigden, this shady, north facing trail also has a handful of the common ferns found in Hixon Forest. And although neither of us claim to be experts about ferns, we will discuss their basics including how they were one of the first to have a vascular system, how they were once the giants of the forest, but were eventually relegated to the understory by the gymnosperms and angiosperms… and how the ferns cleverly "borrowed" a gene from one of the bryophytes to be able to make the switch and live in the dim light beneath the dominant trees. We will have a few samples before the hike to point out the parts of ferns, including looking at the highly distinctive sori with a dissecting microscope. Then we will set off down the trail for a "fern feast"! We hope that this introductory hike will spur the interest of some to more fully investigate the world of ferns, one of the four major groups of plants within the plant kingdom alongside bryophytes, gymnosperms, and angiosperms...and who knows, maybe a youngster in the group will end up a pteridologist! And although the focus will be on the ferns, other plants we see along the way will be fair game to discuss as well. Last, we will plan to pick up trash along the road and parking area afterwards for those so inclined. If you plan to stay for this, bring gloves. If this needs to be canceled due to rain, an email will be sent out and it will be posted on the Friends of the Blufflands Facebook page. Bring a 10x magnifying lens if you have one, but we will have a few for the group to use. Sponsor: Friends of the Blufflands

 - Saturday, September 12          10:00 am - Noon
 - Jackson County near Black River Falls*
There’s something magical about slipping on a pair of old shoes or rubber boots, wading into a cool stream, and discovering what lies beneath the water’s surface. Join naturalist Dan Jackson on Saturday, September 12, from 10:00 a.m. to noonin Jackson County for a hands-on mussel survey that combines the joy of exploring a creek with the excitement of real scientific discovery. As you search for freshwater mussels, you’ll experience the simple wonder of turning over rocks and peering into clear water—just like childhood adventures—but with the opportunity to contribute to something much bigger. Freshwater mussels are quiet champions of healthy streams, filtering water, improving clarity, and supporting countless other species. Yet many of Wisconsin’s mussel populations have declined dramatically, and smaller streams remain largely unexplored. By helping survey a waterway, you'll learn the basics of a casual stream survey and potentially provide valuable information that can guide future conservation efforts. A lifelong outdoorsman and conservation advocate, Dan Jackson will inspire the inner child in you as you wade in the water in search of mussels. His enthusiasm for the natural world is contagious, making this a fun and fascinating experience whether you're a seasoned naturalist or simply curious about what lives beneath the current. Come ready to get your feet wet, embrace your inner explorer, and discover how citizen science can make a lasting difference. *This event will be held on at a location on the Black River near the airport in Black River Falls in Jackson County, and detailed directions will be sent after registration. Please register for this free event by September 9, 2026. Sponsor: Mississippi Valley Conservancy

 - Iowisota Retreat and Nature Education Center, 2472 IA -26, Lansing IA
This is an opportunity to go on a hike in the woods with "the girls" and learn from each other. I may be able to schedule these about once a month in 2026, I'm open to suggestions of time. Location will usually be Iowisota (but might vary over time). Topic will be dependent on what is currently happening in the forest, and what participants are interested in. The format will be informal, so that we can all learn from each other and enjoy a chance to be out together in nature. We'll probably spend up to a couple of hours on a hike, but can vary the time depending on participants interest and schedule. We'll try to keep our group to under 15 people. There is no charge. Sponsor: Iowisota Retreat and Education Center,

 - Kickapoo Valley Reserve Visitor's Center, S3661 State Road 131, La Farge, WI
Monarch butterfly populations have been declining over the last 25 years—essentially the entire time that we’ve been monitoring them. It is important to move beyond documenting this decline and focus on the challenge posed by monarch conservation and insect conservation in general. Karen will describe the amazing biology of migratory monarchs, how we can use data collected by scientists and the public to understand what is driving monarch numbers, and what we can do with that information. Presenter: Karen Oberhauser, has conducted research on several aspects of monarch butterfly ecology. As a professor in the Department of Fisheries, Wildlife and Conservation at the University of Minnesota for most of her career, she taught Conservation Biology, co-founded the Monarch Larva Monitoring Project (MLMP), and used monarchs and the connections people feel for this amazing insect to promote greater understanding of science and conservation. As Director of the UWMadison Arboretum from 2017-2023, Karen fostered a strong Participatory Science program that incorporated the MLMP and many other projects to engage the public in meaningful ecological data collection. Karen has authored over 100 papers on her research on monarchs, insect conservation, and participatory science. She has an undergraduate degree in biology from Harvard University, a degree in science education from UW-Madison, and a PhD in Ecology and Behavioral Biology from the University of Minnesota. Karen is passionate about the conservation of the world’s biodiversity and building connections between humans and the natural world. She is a founding officer of the Monarch Butterfly Fund and has served on several state and national organizations focused on pollinator conservation and participatory science. This is a free guided hike for women. Topic is dependent on what is currently happening in the forest. Format is informal, so that we can learn from each other and enjoy a chance to be out in nature. For Aug 2026 walk, we may go on the valley trails to talk about trees, prairies, plants and birds. Register here.   Sponsor: Iowisota Retreat and Education Center

Fauna of special interest include the regal fritillary and loggerhead shrike. We will hike among and across sand prairies, dunes, and the swales between them, to witness the full-summer bloom, keeping eyes open for arthropods, birds, reptiles, fungi, lichens, and mammals, and sharing what we see. And, we will photograph as many butterflies as possible, to document their presence there, then. Come prepared: Wear protective footwear and clothes; the sun is strong, and poison ivy is abundant  in places. Bring plenty of water, and stay hydrated.
